JULY TASTING NOTES BY LYNN COULTHARD

Endless sunshine and long warm eves makes for summertime outdoor cooking so it is no surprise July is National Grilling Month. To celebrate our great outdoors in beautiful B.C. we have selected some grillingly tasty sippers that will pair wonderfully at your next BBQ.

Trapiche Pinot Gris

Trapiche is Argentina’s largest fine wine exporter. This is a refreshing wine crafted in the Italian Pinot Grigio fashion with lifted aromas of ripe pear, lemon, and red apple. Dry, with crisp acidity and medium bodied, it makes for an easy drinking style. Flash seared scallops on the grill with a squeeze of lemon and a stone fruit salsa will make for some happy campers.

Domaine La Croix Belle Syrah

This Languedoc Syrah from the south of France is ripe with velvety tannins and is brimming with blackberry, plum and liquorice spice flavours. This is an easy and approachable style of Syrah. Heat up the barbie and throw those burgers on!

Ravenswood Besieged

When winemaker Joel Peterson was out picking his grapes for this old vine blend, he was besieged by circling ravens, thunder and lightning. What came of this whirlwind was a brilliantly mastered blend of Petite Sirah, Carignan, Zinfandel and Syrah all from Sonoma. This wine is big, rich and luscious with firm integrated tannins and offers sweet black fruits mixed with baking spice and smoky earth on the palate. Grilled red meats with a hint of char and slathered in steak sauce would master this pairing.

West Cork Black Cask Irish Whiskey

Crafted using a blend of 66% grain whiskies along with 33% malt whiskey. It is then matured in ex-Bourbon barrel and transferred to newly XX charred casks for finishing. The result is a smooth and spicy whiskey with a smoky sweetness encompassing notes of vanilla and baked stone fruits. Perfect match for grilled and charred anything!

Haywire Pink “Bub”

Celebrate the solstice with this lively sparkling wine from Summerland, BC. Aromas of freshly cut strawberries and watermelon are complimented with a lick of sweetness. It’s a perfect garden party sipper, or even pair with Neapolitan pizza!  

Jak’s Friends Rosé

Made exclusively for JAK’S by Meyer Family Vineyards, this rose pops with aromas of rhubarb and strawberry shortcake. Dry to taste, you’ll find this wine pairing very well with a cheese and charcuterie platter, fresh fruit or grilled salmon with a salad of leafy greens.

Trapiche Rosé

This Mendoza winery has a long running track record of producing fantastic wines. Comprised of a blend of 65% Malbec and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, this Rosé offers a melody of red and black berries with a slight peppery spice. Seared Ahi or lighter meats would pair nicely.

Les Anges Côtes du Rhône Rosé

Grenache and Syrah are lightly pressed to achieve this wine’s brilliant salmon colour. Dry with zesty acidity and brimming with juicy flavours of fresh strawberry and raspberry finishing peppery notes.

Synchromesh Riesling Blend 2018

This Riesling is blended from all four of the Synchromesh vineyards in the Okanagan. As a result, it offers a gentle sweetness with zippy acidity, highlighting aromas of lime, peach and ripe apricot. While this wine pairs with almost any dish, try it with fish tacos . or Maui ribs on the BBQ.

Roche Arôme 2018

Schoenberger shines as the grape varietal in this wine. This lesser known grape is explosively aromatic with notes of orange blossom, citrus and fresh flowers. Dry to the taste, the Arộme pairs perfectly with grilled seafoods or a zesty spring salad.

Jak’s Friends Gewurztraminer 2018

Some time ago, proprietor, Jak of Meyer Vineyards scrawled the words “Jak’s Friends” on a bottle of wine that was destined for some of his friends arriving later that day. Today we now have the good fortune of this exclusive for JAK’S Beer, Wine and Spirits. This bright and fresh Gewurztraminer is off dry with floral and tropical notes that pop in the glass! Pair with Tikka Masala, or ginger marinated chicken.

Narrative Red Blend 2018

Blasted Church Viognier

Rich, tropical aromas of pineapple and white flower blossoms abound. This fresh yet fuller bodied white is a versatile dinner companion, pairing well with sunny patios, potluck dinners and everything in between.

Scarpeta Frico Bianco

This blend of Friulano and Chardonnay is the perfect crisp, lightweight Italian white. Aromas of fresh cut apple and blossom follow through on the palate complimented by some zingy acidity and pink grapefruit flavours. Great springtime wine to pair with grilled seafoods and antipasto.

Le Vieux Pin Petit Rouge

Bordertown Pinot Gris

This Osoyoos Pinot Gris is sourced from three separate vineyard parcels on the Bordertown family estate. The wine has a rich, rounded style with aromas and flavours of ripe stone fruits with a hint of tangerine. Versatile for food pairing, it will match up nicely with grilled chicken, seafood and pork tenderloin.

Nielson Chardonnay

A beautifully structured Chardonnay from Santa Barbara. The nose is packed with stone fruit, fig, brown spice and red apples. The palate offers crisp acidity balancing its creamy texture with a touch of subtle oak spice on the finish. Grilled scallops with caramelized bacon would pair wonderfully.

Scarpeta “Frico” Rosso

Made from 90% Sangiovese this Tuscan wine is brimming with crisp tart cherry, juicy red plum and dried herb notes. The wine is medium in body with vibrant acidity and round tannins. Frico Rosso pairs extremely well with charcuterie and hard cheeses.

Carmel Road Pinot Noir

This Monterey Pinot Noir has bright cherry aromas that are layered with notes of wild strawberries and black tea. The palate provides juicy black cherry flavors with notes of cola and hints of vanilla. A silky texture leads to a long finish. Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with seared Ahi tuna and roast duck dishes.

Parducci Zinfandel

Parducci is a long-established Mendocino winery that was one of California’s first Zinfandel producers. A very approachable wine with softer tannins. This wine brims with sweet cherry, blackberry and cooked raspberry accompanied with clove and vanilla sweet spice. Sweet and sour ribs would be an awesome match!

Gran Emotivo Rosso

A rich and smooth red wine produced from late harvested Merlot and Corvina grapes from Veneto. Late maturation gives notes of ripe fruits of stewed plum and dried cherry finishing with a hint of spice from short oak ageing. A solid structure and beautiful balance between soft tannins and lifted acidity. This is a great wine for roasts, red meats and hard cheeses.

Black Tears Cuban Spiced Rum

A delicious rum crafted by the Island Rum Company of Cuba. Subtle sweetness blends with rich aromas and flavours of vanilla, chocolate, coffee with notes of toffee. On the palate it is rounded and smooth with a spicy, dark fruit finish.

Mas Fi Brut Cava

Keep celebrating 2019 with this dry, crisp and refreshing sparkling from Spain. It shows hints of white flowers and citrus on the nose with fresh stone fruits and a pleasant creamy flavour in the mouth.

Lopez de Haro Rosado

This delightful Rose is crafted from a blend of Garnacha and Tempranillo originating from the Rioja region in Spain. Dry on the palate with strawberry, red cherry and watermelon notes balanced with some zippy acidity. Great with grilled seafoods and appetizers.

Pasico Monastrell Shiraz

This rich fruit-driven Monastrell-Shiraz blend is from the Juan Gil estate in Jumilla. A fuller bodied wine that is bursting with flavours of stewed black plum, blackberry, liquorice and dark cocoa. Delivers at a great price. Pair with grilled meats and winter stews.

Diplomatico Mantuano Rum

Mantuano is an excellent blended rum from Venezuela that has aged for up to eight years in white oak casks, which previously served to age bourbons and malt-whisky. Layers of wood spice flavours dominate the palate with clove, caramelized banana and ginger notes on the finish.

Kraken Rum

Release the Kraken! A strong and rich imported rum from the Caribbean blended with more than 13 secret spices to create this mythical beast of a spiced rum. Intense molasses, spice and brown sugar aromas on the nose with clove and vanilla flavours on the palate make this ideal in mixed drinks.

DECEMBER TASTING NOTES BY LYNN COULTHARD

Masi Modello Prosecco

From the hills of Veneto, this fresh and fruity sparkling has a lovely touch of honey sweet. A lively sparkle that is packed with ripe melon, yellow apple and pear. Refreshing and fun it’s perfect for an antipasto platter or the start to any evening!

Caymus Conundrum Blanc de Blanc Sparkling

Conundrum Sparkling is elegant and fun with delicate scents of melon and citrus. Crisp flavors of freshly cut fruit come through on the palate, with warm notes of layered white peach, honeydew and a touch of wet stone minerality on the finish. Great addition to any festive occasion!

Hahn Pinot Noir

This Monterey Pinot Noir’s charismatic aromas include red cherry, ripe strawberry, cola and spice. Flavours of plum and black cherry are completed by a soft mouthfeel. Supple tannins and a bit of acidity end in a beautifully balanced and clean finish. Pinot Noir is a fantastic pairing for turkey accompanied with cranberry sauce.

Gran Passione

This wine is produced using the passito style from Merlot and Corvina grapes in Veneto, Italy. It is full-bodied and rich with dark fruit flavours of blackberry and black cherry balanced by a solid structure. Smoky flavours of leather and tobacco linger on the palate. Serve with braised meats or lamb stew.

Murphy-Goode Cabernet Sauvignon

This wine has great varietal expression from the best of both worlds; Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Brimming with aromas and flavours of black cherry with just a hint of black licorice. The finish will add notes of chocolate, vanilla, and just a touch of toast. Great with charbroiled burgers or your favorite steak fresh off the grill.

Grant Burge Tawny – 10 Years

This fine mature tawny is made from the Barossa’s traditional tawny varieties, Grenache, Mourvedre and Shiraz, and has been blended to an average age of a 10-year-old wine. The palate is sweet and mellow, with a harmonious balance of dried fruit characters, toffee and oak tannins. Delicious with shortbread or traditional Christmas pudding.

Foothills Vodka

Mezzacorona Rose

Rose all year round! This Rose originates from the Trentino Alto Adige region of Italy and is produced from the Lagrein grape. Dry, mid-weight and displaying juicy acidity with floral notes and wild red berry flavours. Great starter for any dinner with aperitifs.

Long Barn Pinot Noir

This California Pinot Noir is silky and seductively smooth. Definitely a crowd pleaser with its sweet cherry and ripe strawberry notes mingled with vanilla spice. No need for food to enjoy this wine but grilled Ahi Tuna with a spicy black cherry compote would be quite delicious.

Parducci Zinfandel

Red Truck Amber Ale

Stolichnaya Gold Vodka

Stolichnaya has long standing Russian roots that stem back to 1848. This edition of Stoli is produced from Russian winter wheat using water filtered through rare meteoric rock and was given a final finish through coils of gold thread. An appropriate name for such a lively and delightful sparkling wine. Kissed with a touch of honey and mingled with a melody of apple, pear and citrus flavours makes this such a fun wine to enjoy. A fantastic start to any eve and will pair beautifully with an appetizer of charcuterie, fruits and cheese.

 

Trapiche Pinot Grigio

Trapiche is Argentina's largest fine wine exporter. This is a refreshing wine crafted in the Italian Pinot Grigio fashion with lifted aromas of ripe pear, lemon, and red apple. Dry, with crisp acidity and medium bodied, it makes for an easy drinking style.

 

Mirabeau Classic Rosé

This lovely Provence Rose is crafted from a mix of Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault. It’s delicate pale salmon hue offers a glimpse of the expressive melody of red berry fruit found on the palate. Dry and elegant with the acidity of fresh strawberries, apple and a hint of spice.

 

Joie Pinot Noir

The Hatch B. Yanco

Made predominantly from Pinot Blanc with just a dollop of Gewurztraminer to add a hint of a floral note. An Okanagan gem that has seen no oak and is produced in a crisp, clean style with refreshing acidity. It is laden with citrus fruits, green apple and tangy grapefruit on the finish. Perfect as a summer sipper. Try with poached BC salmon and apple spinach salad.

 

Raza Pinot Grigio

The Argentinian producer, La Riojana is known for its amazing wines and at an affordable price. Produced in a northern Italian Pinot Grigio style, this wine is light bodied, dry and offers juicy mouth watering acidity along with flavours of apple, white peach and lemon peel. Smoked BC salmon with a touch of dill mayo makes for a great appy pairing!

 

Fitzpatrick Rosé

So exciting to see these wines out on the market from the Fitzpatrick family (prior owners of Cedar Creek winery) This Pinot Noir Rose only sees some skin contact making for a light., delicate style. The wine has a wonderful creamy mid-palate texture and is brimming with strawberry, rhubarb and a hint of sweet spice. Baked BC salmon with a rhubarb and strawberry compote is one delicious match!
