February 2020 Tasting Notes

Snuggle up with some of these wines and spirits for Valentine’s Day. Whether it be Champagne for marking that special occasion with your sweetie or going solo on a warm winter night with Bourbon, there is a little something for everyone’s tastes below.

Bauchet Blanc de Noir Champagne
A lovely Blanc de Pinot Noir on offer from a top boutique Champagne producer. Dry and refreshingly crisp on the palate with flavours of baked pear and apple accented with creamy notes of brioche that linger on the finish. The zesty fresh acidity of this wine would offset any creamy rich pasta dish.

Portal de Calçada Sparkling Cuvee
A fresh and elegant sparkling wine from the Vinho Verde region of Portugal. The use of Arinto and Loureiro grapes give a floral essence followed with citrus and crisp apple notes. The zesty acidity combined with a fresh effervescence make for a lovely palate cleanser.

Pennautier Pinot Noir
This Languedoc Pinot Noir shows seductively ripe on the palate with plump cherry and plum nuances followed by a touch of sweet spice. The silky soft tannin structure lends to an easy drinking style that can be enjoyed on its own. For ultimate enjoyment, try with roast salmon served over a mushroom lentil pilaf.

Frescobaldi Remole
This approachable Tuscan red is produced from Sangiovese with a dash of Cabernet Sauvignon. Mid-weight, it combines flavours of red and black cherry with a hint of cassis and spice. Great winter pasta and pizza night wine.

Tito’s Handmade Vodka
This handcrafted vodka originates from the heart of Texas. It is produced in batches using old fashioned pot stills and the use of corn makes for an incredibly smooth and slightly sweet spirit. Finishes nicely with a subtle smoke and peppery kick. Awarded 90 points by Wine Enthusiast!

IW Harper Bourbon
A classic brand that uses a high level of corn in the mash and was aged in newly charred white oak barrels for a few years before release. Banana, dried fruits, vanilla ice cream and butterscotch immediately hit for aromas. On the palate, it shows as a lighter Bourbon with citrus peel, caramel and warming spices coming through from the oak giving it a smooth texture.
