January 2020 Tasting Notes

New year, new you - so why not try a new beverage or two? These wines and spirits will whisk you away from the doldrums brought on by the cold, wet, winter weather. Bonus: They’re all featured this month at some fantastic prices!

Houghton Crofters Chardonnay

This beautifully crafted Chardonnay displays fresh linear acidity balanced with a creamy texture from lees stirring along with subtle complex nutty and toasty notes from ageing in French oak. The fruit was sourced from two premium growing regions in Western Australia and expresses through flavours of ripe apple, pear and apricot. A lovely match for almond crusted salmon.

Gabbiano Chianti Classico Riserva

An elegant and refined mid-weight Chianti from this historic producer established in the heart of the reowned Chianti Classico region. Produced using 95% Sangiovese, the wine shows juicy acidity and fine-grained tannins with flavours of plum, cherry, cedar and leather. Pair with tomato-based pastas and aged sharp cheeses.

Anakena “Birdman” Cabernet Sauvignon

Anakena was established in the 90’s at the foothills of the Andes in the Cachapoal region of Chile and continues produce quality wines time and time again. An approachable Cabernet Sauvignon with supple tannins and rich berry fruits of blackberry and bramble. Serve with grilled meats or hearty winter stews.

Stolichnaya Vodka

Silky texture carries through with subtle anise, pepper and citrus peel notes. Crisp and clean, this vodka was quadruple filtered and blended with pure spring water. Try a Stoli Black Russian with your favorite coffee liqueur.

Diplomatico Mantuano Rum

A complex and rich rum originating from Venezuela. The long term ageing up to 8 years comes through in the abundance of flavour, from toffee, ginger and baking spices to fig and chocolate. This gem of rum can be savoured on its own or in a classic Dark & Stormy with spicy ginger beer and lime!
