AUGUST TASTING NOTES BY LYNN COULTHARD

August embraces the season of salmon in BC. Kicking off with the Campbell River Salmonfest on August 09th, followed by the Vancouver Chinook Classic on August 17th with a finish at the False Creek Wild Salmon Celebration on August 24th. All things Pinot pair perfectly with salmon. Whether you choose a Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir or Pinot Meunier as your dinner companion, you will not go wrong with Pinot and salmon !

 

Bauchet “Contraste” Champagne

This is a lovely Blanc de Pinot Noir on offer from a top boutique producer. Dry and refreshingly crisp on the palate with flavours of baked pear and apple accented with creamy notes of brioche that linger on the finish. The zesty fresh acidity of this wine would offset the oily texture of any smoked salmon dish perfectly.

 

Pennautier Pinot Noir

This Languedoc Pinot Noir shows seductively ripe with plump cherry and plum flavours followed by a touch of sweet spice. The silky soft tannin structure lends to an easy drinking style that can be enjoyed on its own. For ultimate enjoyment, try roast salmon served over a mushroom lentil pilaf.

Upper Bench Pinot Blanc

A delightful summer sipper, the Upper Bench Pinot Blanc greets you with bright guava, peaches and lemon aromatics. To taste, you’ll find notes of melon and papaya with a zippy mineral finish. Very refreshing and pairs perfectly with goat cheese salads or a deliciously ripe peach. 


La Stella Vivace Pinot Grigio

Styled like its Italian namesake, this Pinot Grigio shows off a zesty minerality and bursts through the glass with notes of lemon and lime. Refreshing on the palate, you’ll taste some classic Okanagan stone fruit with a racy, citrus finish. Pair with any fish, mussels in broth or a summery pasta salad. 


Ketel One Peach & Orange Blossom Vodka

From the heart of Holland, this vodka is crafted using only the finest ingredients. A 100% winter wheat vodka that is redistilled using fresh botanicals and then infused with natural fruit essences prior to bottling. The result is a pure fresh vodka abound with flavours of white peach, blossom and orange rind. Add soda water over crushed ice and top with a sliced fresh peach garnish.

Macallan Gold

The Gold is the lightest of the Macallan 1824 series. An elegant yet rich style displaying notes of warm toffee spice alongside dried banana and spiced oatmeal with uplifting hints of pear. Sherry notes finish on a clean length – a perfect whisky for the transition into autumn.

Knob Creek

As the name suggests this Rockstar is punched and packed full of fruit tasting like a tropical summer salad drizzled in honey. A lively spritz helps carry it through on the palate.

Palm Bay Grapefruit

Bubbly light pink colour; aromas of fresh pink grapefruit dusted with sugar, rose petals and orange zest; on the palate it is refreshingly sweet and tart with flavours of ruby red grapefruit and ginger ale.

Grolsch

Grolsch lager is triple cold filtered making a smooth and light refreshing beer. The flavours show subtle maltiness with a faint tinge of hops.
